A diverticulum
is an outpouching of the wall of the gut. About one-third of the population
in the western world has diverticulosis
by the age of 60 years. The diverticula are usually located in the sigmoid
colon. Complications of diverticulosis
are diverticulitis,
haemorrhage, fistulae
and sometimes post-inflammatory strictures. In diverticulitis there is the
danger of abscess formation or perforation. In perforation contrast medium
may be seen next to the colon in the peritoneal cavity and/or contrast is
track into a collection adjacent to the diseased colon.
