man, 65-years-old, admitted with dyspnoe. Physical signs are fine inspiratory
crackles at the base of the lung. Pulmonary function testing reveals restrictive
ventilatory defect.

Cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis (Idiopathic
lung fibrosis) is the most common diagnosis among patients presenting
with interstitial lung disease.The patients, usually men, present in the sixth
or seventh decade. Physical signs are fine inspiratory crackles at the base
of the lung. Pulmonary function testing reveals restrictive ventilatory defect.
Diffuse reticular, reticulonodular or "ground-glass" changes that may progress
to "honeycomb lung"
are noted on chest x-ray or CT scan.
