There are two main
typs of hiatus hernia:
Sliding hiatus hernia
(more than 80%): The gastroesophageal region slides superior into the chest
through the esophageal hiatus when the patient lies down or bends over. Paraesophageal
hiatus hernia: The gastroesophageal region remains in its normal position,
but parts of the stomach and peritoneum slip through the esophageal hiatus.
Some hernias present features of both types and are referred to as mixed hiatus
hernias.
